How the Quality of the Coin Relates to its Designated Grade Breaking coins down into Quality Groups is very difficult because each coin has its own unique combination of characteristics. Unfortunately, because of space considerations, I have found it necessary to do so here. I have three basic classifications: A, B, and C. I have found, however, that many coins were hard to fit into a category. For example, a coin may have fantastic luster but too many marks to qualify as an 'A' quality coin. Keeping this in mind, here are the three categories and their respective meanings:
A Premium Quality
Well above average. A coin with superior eye appeal and very strong originality. Quite often these coins are potential upgrades and have some characteristics of the next-higher grade.
B Acceptable for the Grade
These coins are solid for the grade and should satisfy the majority of buyers. This is a large grouping and the majority of coins will fit into it. The coins in this group can range anywhere from above-average down to about-average.
C Barely acceptable for the Grade
These coins should have no trouble trading but they would be considered average at best and overgraded by some. Quite often the coins are technically properly graded but some negative eye appeal puts them into this group. Most often this group will be sold off wholesale into the sight-unseen markets. When they do appear on the list they will be priced lower and in some ways may represent very good value, particularly on the generic issues which trade sight-unseen.
     * Higher grade coins are less likely to qualify for A or B+ status than lower grade coins. As the grade of a coin gets higher, the chance that it will be superior for the grade (somewhat undergraded) or, have claims to the next higher grade, tends to diminish. Coins grading MS65 or better that receive a 'B' rating will be nice looking coins.
